The ‘DMZ Peace Trail’ theme routes are designed to allow the public to walk and experience the peace, ecology, history, and natural values of the areas bordering the DMZ. The theme routes will be operated in four regions: Gimpo, Goyang, Paju, and Yeoncheon, and it is expected that the program will contribute to regional development and tourism revitalization.

Applications for participation have been accepted online since March 28 through the ‘Peace Trail’ website and the Korea Dulle-gil walking travel mobile application (app) ‘Durunubi’. The participation fee is 10,000 KRW and will be reimbursed in local gift certificates or specialty products to promote the local economy. However, since the area is within the Civilian Control Line, participants must carry identification.

The four theme routes in Gyeonggi Province are composed as follows: ▲ ‘Gimpo Hangang Estuary - Aegibong Course,’ where the Imjin River, Yesong River, and Han River converge at Jogang (祖江) and where visitors can vividly see North Korea’s Sunchon Village ▲ ‘Goyang Janghang Wetland Ecological Course,’ which allows visitors to experience Janghang Wetland and Haengju Fortress ▲ ‘Paju Imjingak - Dorasan Course,’ which includes ecological trails along the Imjin River, the Dora Observatory with a clear view of Kaesong City in North Korea, and the Dorasan Peace Park symbolizing peace and hope ▲ ‘Yeoncheon 1.21 Infiltration Route Exploration Course,’ which includes the 1.21 infiltration route and Horogoru, a strategic military site from the Three Kingdoms period.

Each route offers the chance to experience tourist resources unique to the border areas, and participants can listen to interesting stories related to the border region from guides and staff composed of local residents.

Park Mi-jung, Director of the DMZ Policy Division of Gyeonggi Province, said, “The Demilitarized Zone (DMZ) is a region where history, peace, and ecology coexist, marked by the barbed wire fence that divides the Korean Peninsula east to west due to the Korean War. It is the most sought-after tourist destination for foreign visitors to Korea.” She added, “Through the ‘DMZ Peace Trail’ theme route program, we aim to provide opportunities to feel the importance of freedom, peace, and nature, and to experience history and culture.”
