Former Firefighter Saves 80-Year-Old Cardiac Arrest Patient with CPR

Nam Gibok (71), a former firefighter and currently a private safety instructor, saved an elderly citizen in their 80s who collapsed in a restaurant by performing cardiopulmonary resuscitation (CPR).



According to the Gyeonggi Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters on the 1st, the incident occurred around 1:50 PM on the 30th of last month at a restaurant located in Mukhyun-ri, Hwado-eup, Namyangju-si, where a man suddenly collapsed and lost consciousness while eating.

At the scene, Mr. Nam immediately assessed the patient's condition, determined cardiac arrest, asked an acquaintance to call 119, and promptly began performing CPR.


Mr. Nam continued chest compressions for about 2 to 3 minutes, restoring the patient's breathing and consciousness, and then handed over the patient to the paramedics from the Hwado 119 Safety Center of the Namyangju Fire Station who arrived afterward.


Hong Jangpyo, head of the Northern Fire and Disaster Headquarters, stated, “Immediate emergency treatment within the golden time saved a precious life,” adding, “This case once again confirms the importance of CPR training.”
