Extorting 7 Million Won from Drunk Drivers
Deliberate Accidents and Threats of Reporting
The North Gyeongsang Provincial Police Agency announced on the 1st that they had apprehended four young men and women in their twenties on charges of extorting money by threatening drunk drivers or acquaintances. The suspects lured their targets into sexual relations and then threatened to report them for sexual assault. One of the four has been taken into custody.
According to the police, these individuals, who were neighborhood acquaintances, followed a drunk driver in June last year, deliberately caused an accident, and then threatened to report the drunk driving, extorting 7 million won. They also attempted to demand 15 million won from another victim using the same method but failed.
The police further stated that in August last year, the suspects conspired with two women from a call service to lure an acquaintance, induce him to drink and engage in sexual relations, and then threatened to report him for sexual assault. They are accused of extorting a total of 40 million won in settlement money over five occasions using this method.
The police explained that they launched an investigation after receiving a tip-off, analyzed CCTV footage and vehicle black boxes from the scene, and confirmed that the suspects had shared the extorted money before apprehending them.
A police official emphasized, "The best way to avoid becoming a target of extortionists who prey on drunk drivers is not to drink and drive in the first place," and added, "We will continue to crack down on malicious extortion crimes."
