The 'Special Seminar to Commemorate the Hosting of the 2027 World Congress of Sociology,' organized by Min Hyungbae, a member of the Democratic Party of Korea (representing Gwangsan-eul, Gwangju), will be held on the 2nd in Seminar Room 1 of the National Assembly Members’ Office Building. This seminar, themed 'Social Change and Democracy in a Global Crisis,' is being held in anticipation of the upcoming 2027 ISA World Congress of Sociology in Gwangju.


The first presenter is Geoffrey Pleyers, President of the International Sociological Association (ISA) and Professor of Sociology at UCLouvain (FNRS/UCLouvain) in Belgium. Professor Pleyers will discuss 'Social Movements and Change in a World in Crisis,' exploring the roles and possibilities of social movements amid global crises.


The second presentation will be delivered by Kang Minhyeong, Professor of Sociology at Jeonbuk National University, under the title 'Globalization, Inequality, and the Crisis of Democracy.' Professor Kang will conduct a structural analysis of the triple challenges of global capitalism expansion, deepening socio-economic inequality, and the crisis of democratic institutions, and will seek responses for Korean society.


The session will be chaired by Lim Wuntaek, Professor of Sociology at Keimyung University and President of the Korean Sociological Association. The panel discussion will feature Choi Saetbyeol, Professor of Sociology at Ewha Womans University, and Hong Ilpyo, Director of the Social and Cultural Research Office at the National Assembly Research Service, providing a comprehensive discussion that combines academic and policy perspectives.


This event is co-hosted by members of the National Assembly Kim Younghwan, Min Hyungbae, Baek Hyeryeon, Choi Hyeongdu, and Heo Young, and jointly organized by the Korean Sociological Association, the Korean Social Science Research Council (KOSSREC), and the National Assembly Fair Society Forum. The event is supported by the National Research Foundation of Korea (NRF) and the SSK Networking project of the Korean Social Science Support Program.


Min Hyungbae, who co-hosted the seminar, stated, "I hope this seminar will serve as an opportunity to seek new policy solutions required in this era of global crisis."
