Daegu City announced that as of the closing of applications (including cancellations) for the 2nd Local Government Official Recruitment Exam on the 31st of last month, a total of 5,888 people had applied, resulting in a competition rate of 17.7 to 1.
According to the application results by job category, the Medical Technology Level 9 and General Administration Level 9 positions recorded high competition rates of 101 to 1 and 60.5 to 1, respectively, while the General Civil Engineering Level 9 position, due to a significant increase in the number of planned recruits, saw a relatively low competition rate of 4.5 to 1.
Notably, this is the largest exam held since the relaxation of residency requirements for eligibility, and among all applicants, 1,216 (21%) were from outside the region.
In fact, while last year’s 2nd exam saw 6,275 applicants with only 675 (10.7%) from outside the region, this year’s exam, despite a decrease in total applicants compared to the previous year, saw the proportion of non-local applicants nearly double. This is regarded as a visible result of the policy to ease residency restrictions.
Daegu City, as the first metropolitan city to relax the existing residency requirement, has opened the door for more talented individuals to challenge for public office in Daegu. This is expected to provide an opportunity for talented people from across the country with diverse backgrounds and abilities to bring new vitality to Daegu.
Furthermore, if this change leads to the recruitment of outstanding external talent, it is expected that competition for public office will become more active, and the integration of new perspectives and diverse experiences will enhance the quality of administrative services in Daegu City.
Meanwhile, the 2nd Local Government Official Recruitment Exam will begin with the written test on June 21, followed by interviews from August 6 to August 8, and the final successful candidates will be announced on August 29. A total of 333 people will be selected across 19 job categories, including General Administration Level 9.
Kim Jeonggi, Deputy Mayor for Administrative Affairs of Daegu City, said, "It is very encouraging that the policy to relax residency requirements, implemented for the first time in a metropolitan city, has actually led to the inflow of nationwide talent," and added, "We will continue to actively pursue policies so that capable individuals can apply for and grow as public officials in Daegu City."
