The Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment will conduct joint water quality inspections in 31 cities and counties from April to June to ensure the safety of water sources in the province.
This year, the inspection targets are 278 water springs in the province, including Seongjusang and Gukcheongsa.
The main inspection items include a total of 47 categories such as ▲microorganisms (e.g., Escherichia coli) ▲harmful heavy metals (e.g., cadmium, arsenic) ▲harmful organic substances (e.g., TCE, PCE) ▲aesthetic impact substances (taste, odor, etc.).
In last year’s survey, 71 out of 268 sites exceeded the microbial standards and were judged as non-compliant.
This year, facilities that have been judged non-compliant three or more times will undergo joint inspections with the Water Resources Headquarters, and the institute plans to collect samples directly for detailed analysis.
Water springs that receive a non-compliance judgment will be immediately closed for use, and the relevant local governments will implement measures such as thorough disinfection, pollution source maintenance, and repair of water intake facilities before deciding on reuse after re-inspection. If pollution persists or the water source is depleted, closure measures may be taken.
Gyeonggi-do and local governments will promote purification measures such as installing UV sterilizers to improve the hygiene level of water springs. Inspection results will be disclosed through water spring information boards, the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment website (gg.go.kr/gg_health), and the Gyeonggi Provincial Government website (gg.go.kr).
Kim Dong-gi, head of the Water Environment Research Department at the Gyeonggi-do Institute of Health and Environment, said, "Thorough monitoring and management of public water sources such as water springs are essential," adding, "We will do our best to provide safe drinking water and disclose reliable water quality information so that residents can use them with confidence."
