Traditional Pansori Competition and Hands-on Experiences
Boseong County in Jeollanam-do announced that the 27th Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival, Korea's representative traditional music festival, will be held for three days from May 4 to 6 during the Boseong Dahyang Festival.
The Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival is hosted by Boseong County and organized by the Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival Promotion Committee, and is held annually to preserve and develop Korean traditional music.
Through the national pansori and gosu competitions, the festival discovers new talents and provides performance opportunities, thereby contributing to the expansion of the traditional arts base.
This year’s festival is centered around traditional pansori and features a variety of programs where visitors can experience the elegance and depth of tradition, including the national pansori and gosu competitions, special performances by master musicians, and a memorial ceremony for renowned singers.
Additionally, hands-on programs for families, such as traditional instrument-making experiences, tavern sales events, and magic lessons, are also prepared to provide visitors with a rich array of enjoyable activities.
In particular, this year’s festival will feature a special performance by Jo Sanghyun, Korea’s leading pansori master, promising a meaningful stage where the essence of traditional music can be experienced.
The festival will welcome visitors with a variety of programs over three days. On May 4, the preliminary rounds of the national pansori and gosu competitions will open the festival, with participants competing in various categories such as master singer and drummer, university and general, rookie, and student divisions.
On May 5, the finals of the competition will be held, along with the senior division contest, master singer and drummer showcase, congratulatory performances by previous Presidential Award winners, and a special performance by the Boseong County Korean Traditional Music Orchestra, followed by the awards ceremony.
On May 6, a memorial ceremony for renowned singers will be held at the Boseong Pansori Sacred Site. It will be a meaningful occasion to honor the achievements of master singers who have carried on the Boseong sori tradition and to continue the spirit of traditional pansori.
Kim Cheolwoo, the county governor, stated, "The Seopyeonje Boseong Sori Festival has established itself as Korea’s leading traditional music festival," and added, "We have prepared a variety of programs so that everyone, young and old, can enjoy Korean traditional music and experience the beauty of sound. We hope for your great interest and participation."
