Siheung City has been selected as the Gyeonggi Province candidate site for the 'Complex Marine Leisure Tourism City' contest project promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries. This project is a national initiative promoted by the Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries to foster marine leisure tourism cities. In Gyeonggi Province, Siheung City and Hwaseong City competed. With this selection as the target site, the city plans to jointly submit the contest application with the province in April.

The Ministry of Oceans and Fisheries will select two final project sites nationwide as early as June. If selected in the contest, 100 billion KRW in national funds and 100 billion KRW in local funds will be supported. Additionally, with private investment of 800 billion KRW, the project will be promoted on a total scale of 1 trillion KRW. To this end, local governments applying for the contest must submit a Letter of Commitment (LOC) promising private sector participation.

The city plans to establish a foundation capable of performing marine leisure and sports functions by developing world-class water leisure facilities centered around the Geobukseom area. Geobukseom is an artificial island covering 325,208 square meters, created in the Siwha Multi-Techno Valley (MTV) area of Jeongwang-dong by Siheung City to revitalize marine leisure tourism.

The city intends to leverage its advantages such as accessibility to Incheon International Airport and possession of Siwha Lake in the contest. In particular, if selected, it is expected to create synergy effects with major projects for regional tourism revitalization that have been promoted, including the construction of an artificial surfing site, establishment of a marine ecological science center, and development of the Geobukseom marina.

Yoon Jin-cheol, Director of Balanced Development Bureau of Siheung City, said, "This contest project is an opportunity to activate private investment in Geobukseom, which has been delayed due to economic downturn and rising construction costs," and added, "We will make every effort to be selected as the final project site for the development and revitalization of the Geobukseom area."
