The Gyeonggi Provincial Office of Education (Superintendent Lim Tae-hee) announced on the 28th that it has officially launched the ‘Artificial Intelligence (AI)-based Written and Essay-type Assessment Pilot Operation Research Group (hereinafter referred to as the Research Group)’ and is accelerating efforts to establish an evaluation system with objectivity and reliability.

The Research Group is a policy implementation research group that seeks policy directions for applying AI-based written and essay-type assessments in school settings.

A total of 29 schools applied for the Research Group recruitment, which began on the 10th. In particular, high schools showed a competition rate of 7.5 to 1, drawing significant interest from school teachers. After a fair screening process, the Office of Education selected seven research groups at the school level (2 elementary, 3 middle, and 3 high schools).

The Research Group is responsible for pilot applying the AI-based written and essay-type assessment system by school level, verifying it, and identifying areas for improvement. Additionally, it will develop subject-specific written and essay-type assessment tools (rubrics) to assist schools. The Office of Education plans to produce materials based on the research results and support their dissemination to all schools in the province.

On the 28th, the Office of Education held a briefing session for teachers operating the selected research group schools. The session began with a keynote presentation by Oh Chan-sook, Director of the Digital Talent Bureau, titled ‘AI-based Written and Essay-type Assessment System in the Digital Era.’

The session continued with presentations on ▲ AI-based written and essay-type assessment operation cases by the pilot operation research group ▲ sharing of research group topics and operational guidance ▲ discussions on the direction of the research group’s role and field proposals.

The attending teachers showed enthusiasm and commitment by proposing various alternatives for sharing research topics and generalizing research results. They also expressed expectations and interest in research on a fair and highly reliable AI-based written and essay-type assessment system.

Kim Yeon-kyung, an English teacher at Bongdam High School, said, “An AI assessment system that supports written and essay-type assessments is essential to reduce teachers’ grading burdens and provide personalized education for students,” adding, “I will do my best to ensure that the research results are established in general schools.”

Oh Chan-sook, Director of the Digital Talent Bureau at the Office of Education, stated, “For the AI-based written and essay-type assessment system of the Office of Education to become a system with objectivity, reliability, and fairness, active interest and participation from teachers are necessary,” and added, “We will continue to expand support for strengthening teacher capabilities so that AI-based written and essay-type assessments can be firmly established in school settings.”
