Jeollanam-do has announced plans to invest 10.8 billion KRW this year to foster the entire cycle of the solar salt industry, from production to distribution and export. The "2025 First Solar Salt Harvest Ceremony," held on the 28th at Taepyeong Salt Field in Shinan, marks the beginning of this initiative.

Solar salt is an eco-friendly salt produced by channeling seawater into salt fields and evaporating the moisture using only wind and sunlight. It is rich in health-beneficial minerals such as magnesium, potassium, and calcium.

In particular, Jeollanam-do, with its warm climate, significant tidal range, and natural mudflats, possesses the optimal natural environment for solar salt production, accounting for approximately 91% (189,000 tons in 2024) of the nation’s total output, making it the largest solar salt producing region in Korea.

The province is implementing various support measures to enhance the sustainability of the solar salt industry and to stabilize prices through quality improvement.

To automate production and improve the salt field environment, the province will distribute ▲automatic salt harvesters (680 million KRW), ▲electric tillers (610 million KRW), and ▲automated transport carts (150 million KRW), and will establish ▲large-scale production complexes (100 ha; total project cost 3 billion KRW).

For quality and hygiene management and to secure long-term storage facilities, the province will provide ▲packaging material support (630 million KRW), ▲salt field flooring improvement (4.58 billion KRW), and ▲long-term storage facilities (350 million KRW).

To stabilize domestic solar salt prices and expand exports, the province will strengthen ▲the hosting of a salt expo (240 million KRW), ▲promotion of premium solar salt (230 million KRW), and ▲development of export products and overseas marketing (140 million KRW). Additionally, the ▲Comprehensive Solar Salt Distribution Center, which opened last September, will be fully operational to serve as a control tower for solar salt exports and to further expand into the global market.

Furthermore, the province plans to invest in welfare projects to improve working conditions for salt field workers, including ▲the construction of accommodations (three sites, 3.1 billion KRW), ▲a labor condition survey (80 million KRW), and ▲customized training programs (10 million KRW).
