Korea Rail Network Authority Conducts Safety Inspections and Performance Evaluations on 285 Railway Facilities

Utilizing Advanced Smart Equipment

The Korea Rail Network Authority announced on the 28th that it has officially commenced the precision safety inspection and performance evaluation service for Class 1 and 2 railway facilities. Class 1 refers to high-speed and general railway bridges, tunnels, etc., while Class 2 refers to bridges over 100 meters and tunnels located in metropolitan cities.

This year's inspection and evaluation targets include a total of 285 sites: 183 bridges, 80 tunnels, 21 retaining walls, and 1 slope, whose inspection deadlines have arrived according to the Facility Safety Act. Approximately 45.7 billion KRW will be invested to complete the service by the end of the year.

In this service, smart equipment will be utilized to enhance inspection accuracy and ensure the safety of inspectors. High-quality precision safety inspections and performance evaluations will be conducted using 3D Lidar, drones, and structural measurement systems for steel structures. For bridges crossing rivers, underwater investigations of the foundations will be carried out to thoroughly check for structural defects and prepare for natural disasters such as extreme heavy rains.

Lee Seong-hae, Chairman of the Authority, stated, "Through this precision safety inspection and performance evaluation, we will promptly improve facilities that require repair and reinforcement to prioritize railway safety. As facility managers, we will do our best to create a safe railway environment."

Previously, when promoting the precision safety inspection and performance evaluation service last year, the Authority improved the system by expanding the proportion of technical personnel evaluation (SOQ) to create a technology-centered bidding environment and applying customized smart technology from the Korea Institute of Civil Engineering and Building Technology.
