The schools that signed the agreement are ▲Haan Nam Elementary School ▲Gwangmyeong Middle School ▲Bitgaon Middle School ▲Haan Buk Middle School ▲Gwanghui High School ▲Unsan High School. According to the agreement, these schools will open their multipurpose gymnasiums to the general public during evening hours and weekends when there are no classes.
The agreement aims to open school gymnasiums to local residents to revitalize community sports activities and establish a win-win cooperation system between schools and the community. Accordingly, in the Gwangmyeong area, 37 out of 41 schools with gymnasiums, including these six schools, will be open to citizens.
Citizens wishing to use the gymnasiums must make a reservation in advance with the respective schools and can use the facilities during weekday evenings and weekends when there are no classes. The status of the opening of school multipurpose gymnasiums can be checked on the Gwangmyeong City website. For more details, inquiries can be made to the administrative office of the open schools or the City Hall Education and Youth Division.
Previously, the city has prepared various support measures to open school gymnasiums. Since 2019, the city has been supporting public utility fees and facility maintenance costs for schools that open their gymnasiums. In 2023, to reduce the burden on schools, cleaning and management personnel were assigned, and since last year, support for subscribing to sports facility liability insurance has also been provided. Due to these policies, the city was selected last month in the '2025 School Sports Facility Opening Support Project' competition hosted by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, securing 234 million KRW in national funding.
Park Seungwon, Mayor of Gwangmyeong City, said, "This agreement is the starting point for win-win cooperation where schools and the community grow together," adding, "We will spare no budgetary or policy support necessary to expand gymnasium openings and ensure safe operations."
