Earlier, on the 13th, three travelers?a Korean woman Lee (33), her mother Kim (59), and Kim’s sibling Kim (54)?went missing while traveling from the Grand Canyon area to Las Vegas. They were originally scheduled to return on the 17th, but when contact was lost, their family in Korea requested assistance from the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, prompting an investigation. Local police found that the vehicle they were in was last located near the site of a 22-vehicle chain collision that occurred on the day they went missing.
At that time, on Highway 40 heading west from the Grand Canyon toward Las Vegas, a chain collision occurred amid a snowstorm, resulting in two deaths and 16 injuries. The accident caused a large fire that completely burned the vehicles beyond recognition, making it difficult for authorities to recover remains.
The police stated that further investigation confirmed that one of the vehicles involved in the collision was a BMW SUV. The rental car used by Lee and her group was also a BMW. However, Arizona authorities explained, "The additional remains recovered are small in quantity and severely damaged by fire, which may make identification difficult."
