SAFE-i24 Becomes First Government System
to Obtain ISO/IEC 42001 AI Management Certification
The Ministry of Food and Drug Safety announced on the 27th that the 'Imported Food Risk Prediction and Electronic Review (SAFE-i24)' system has become the first government agency system to obtain the international standard artificial intelligence (AI) management system certification 'ISO/IEC 42001.'
SAFE-i24 is a system that automatically inspects imported foods with no safety issues. Through this system, document inspections that were previously only processed during working hours can now be conducted 24 hours a day, and inspection time has been reduced by up to 48 hours.
ISO/IEC 42001 is a global standard jointly established by the International Organization for Standardization (ISO) and the International Electrotechnical Commission (IEC) to optimize system operations and support decision-making using AI. Companies such as Google, Samsung Electronics, and SK C&C have also obtained this certification.
Previously, the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety collaborated with the Ministry of Government Legislation to establish the legal basis for introducing SAFE-i24 under the 'Special Act on Imported Food Safety Management.' This is the first case of 'automatic disposition' under the Administrative Procedures Act enacted in 2021. Automatic disposition refers to actions carried out entirely through an automated system without human intervention by public officials.
Oh Yu-kyung, Commissioner of the Ministry of Food and Drug Safety, explained, "This certification is the first case of the government's digital administrative capabilities being internationally recognized," adding, "It has become an opportunity to enhance the external status of our imported food inspection system through cooperation with the Ministry of Government Legislation." Lee Wan-gyu, Commissioner of the Ministry of Government Legislation, said, "I hope that automatic disposition will be firmly established through the AI management system certification."
