United with the People of Damyang in the Face of National Disaster... Gratitude to Firefighting Crews
"Promise to Ensure Smooth Installation of Damyang Wildfire Response Center"
Lee Jaejong, the Democratic Party candidate for Damyang County Governor, announced on the 27th, "Considering the national disaster caused by wildfires, I have decided to conduct a quiet election campaign for the remainder of the campaign period."
Although a special election typically requires attention-grabbing campaign strategies to address low voter turnout, he judged that uniting efforts to overcome the national disaster is more important.
Lee initially planned to engage with residents through various promotional methods, such as the county's first party-against-party election and lively performances under the slogan "Bigger, More Exciting," but has withdrawn these plans.
Since the 21st, simultaneous wildfires in areas such as Uiseong in North Gyeongsang Province and Sancheong in South Gyeongsang Province have resulted in the highest-ever number of wildfire-related fatalities, with 26 deaths reported so far. Despite repeated firefighting efforts, the wildfires continue to spread due to strong winds, high temperatures, and dry weather conditions.
Lee stated, "I made this decision after seeing Democratic Party leader Lee Jaemyung, who overcame harsh judicial ordeals, visit the wildfire disaster sites immediately after leaving court," and added, "I believe the people of Damyang will fully understand and generously support this decision, sympathizing with the national disaster situation."
He also said, "Together with the people of Damyang, I sincerely thank the firefighters and emergency crews for their hard work, and I earnestly hope for heavy rain so the fires can be fully extinguished as soon as possible." He emphasized, "Since Damyang is not immune to wildfires, I promise that, once in office, the installation of the wildfire response center currently in progress will be my top priority."
Meanwhile, Lee was born in Subuk-myeon, Damyang County, and has served as a Blue House administrator, Democratic Party deputy spokesperson at the central party, chief spokesperson for presidential candidate Moon Jaein's Gwangju campaign headquarters, and head of policy media at the Democratic Party's Gwangju City Party. Most recently, he was appointed as chairman of the Democratic Party's Damyang County Tourism Industry Development Special Committee.
