The number of illegal and substandard imported children's products detected before the new school semester nearly tripled compared to the previous year.
On the 27th, the Korea Customs Service announced that from the 5th to the 25th of last month, it conducted a focused safety inspection of children's products such as school supplies and toys in collaboration with the National Institute of Technology and Standards, and detected about 150,000 illegal and substandard imported products that did not meet domestic safety standards.
The quantity of products detected in this year's focused inspection is about 104,000 more than the approximately 54,000 items found during a similar inspection conducted around the same time last year.
The focused inspection was carried out mainly on 13 categories of learning and play products, including school supplies and toys, whose demand increases around the new school semester.
Among the illegal and substandard products detected during this process, about 33,000 were school supplies and about 118,000 were toys.
When importing school supplies and toys, KC certification must be obtained. However, it was found that more than 60% of the detected school supplies either did not have KC certification or falsely displayed certification information.
A Korea Customs Service official stated, “To ensure public safety, we plan to continue conducting focused safety inspections of product groups whose demand surges during specific periods, such as the new school semester.”
