"Realizing ESG with AI"… SKT Unveils 'Do The Good AI'

SK Telecom unveiled its ESG (Environmental, Social, Governance) vision integrating artificial intelligence (AI) across ESG management, called ‘DO THE GOOD AI,’ on the 27th.


SKT’s newly introduced ESG vision ‘DO THE GOOD AI’ is composed of three main areas: ‘DO AI,’ ‘T.H.E. AI,’ and ‘GOOD AI.’ It signifies enhancing competitiveness in telecommunications and technology through AI (DO AI), securing AI reliability and safety based on the AI governance ‘T.H.E AI (By Telco. For Humanity. With Ethics AI)’ introduced by SKT in March last year (T.H.E. AI), and making positive contributions to the world through AI (GOOD AI).


Through this, SKT plans to create synergy between AI and ESG to contribute to the growth of its AI business while simultaneously driving positive change in various fields with AI and pursuing sustainable growth.


On the environmental front, SKT is promoting fundamental net-zero execution plans such as AI-based network design and energy efficiency. When designing communication networks, SKT utilizes AI technology to predict customer quality changes in advance and efficiently build networks by placing network equipment in optimal locations. Additionally, AI technology dynamically manages the electricity consumption of communication equipment according to network traffic load levels, thereby reducing electricity usage.


In the social domain, SKT proposes solutions to social issues based on AI technology, such as preventing voice phishing and caring for socially vulnerable groups. Leveraging AI, SKT blocks over 1.3 million suspected voice phishing messages and calls monthly on average, advancing related technologies and leading efforts to prevent customer damage.


Moreover, using video recognition AI technology, SKT provides the ‘Carevia’ service, which analyzes challenging behaviors of people with developmental disabilities and supports expert care.


In the governance (G) area, SKT applies AI across all ESG fields by introducing and advancing AI governance. SKT attracted industry attention by unveiling AI governance ‘T.H.E. AI’ in March last year. Through these efforts, SKT became the first domestic telecom company to obtain the international standard certification for AI management systems, ‘ISO/IEC 42001.’


This year, SKT plans to further advance AI governance and support the ‘AI Pyramid Strategy’ to have strong execution power based on it, evolving into a global AI company.


Jonghwan Eom, Head of SKT’s ESG Promotion Office, stated, “Through the newly introduced ESG vision ‘DO THE GOOD AI,’ we will create synergy by integrating AI and ESG and take the lead in fulfilling our social responsibilities as an AI company.”
