50-Story Height · 2370t... Hyundai Construction Builds Korea's Largest Petrochemical Facility

Carrying Out the Largest Petrochemical Project in Korea
Hyundai Construction Installs the Nation's Tallest Propylene Separation Tower at the Shahin Project Site

Hyundai Construction announced on the 27th that it has installed the largest propylene separation tower in South Korea at the Shahin Project construction site. The tower stands 118 meters tall, has a diameter of 8.5 meters, and weighs 2,370 tons, making it the largest petrochemical facility in the country.

After transporting the equipment, which is as tall as a 50-story apartment building, from the unloading dock to the site, it was erected vertically using a tower lifting system and installed over 14 hours. Propylene is one of the basic materials used to produce petrochemical products, and this facility is regarded as a symbolic building of the production base to be operated in the future.

The Shahin Project is the largest project in the domestic petrochemical market. It involves an investment of 9.258 trillion KRW to build high value-added petrochemical product production facilities on a site equivalent to about 120 soccer fields within the Ulsan Onsan National Industrial Complex. Hyundai Construction is the main contractor for the entire Shahin Project and, together with Hyundai Engineering and DL E&C, is responsible for Package 1 of the ethylene facility construction.

There are many large-scale facilities. In addition to the propylene separation tower recently erected, one of the core units, the cracking heater, stands 68 meters tall and weighs 3,200 tons. The total volume of concrete used for the civil engineering works of the package handled by Hyundai Construction amounts to 333,749 cubic meters, equivalent to 60,000 ready-mix concrete trucks. The steel frame used weighs 98,634 tons, enough to build 14 Eiffel Towers.

The current progress rate is about 60%. The company expects that after installing the steam cracker in the first half of the year, the main processes will be completed, and commissioning will begin in the second half. A Hyundai Construction official said, "Based on our global project execution experience and know-how, we are showing a faster progress rate than planned," adding, "We will safely complete the project by June next year and set a new milestone in domestic petrochemical plant construction."
