The 2nd Truth and Reconciliation Commission (Truth and Reconciliation Commission) announced on the 25th at its 102nd committee meeting that it has decided to investigate the 'Daegu and Gimcheon Prisoner Sacrifice Incident' as a truth verification case.
According to the Truth and Reconciliation Commission's investigation, immediately after the outbreak of the Korean War in July-August 1950, at least 1,400 inmates of Daegu Prison were collectively sacrificed by military military police, counterintelligence units, and local police in places such as the valleys of Yonggye-ri, Gachang-myeon, Dalseong-gun, Daegu Metropolitan City, and the cobalt mine in Pyeongsan-dong, Gyeongsan-si, Gyeongbuk Province.
In the same year, in July, up to 650 inmates of Gimcheon Prison were also sacrificed by the military and police in locations such as Dolgogae in Songjuk-ri, Guseong-myeon, Gimcheon-si, Gyeongbuk Province, Daebaengijae in Gwangmyeong-ri, and Jikjisa Valley in Daehang-myeon.
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission recommended the government and local governments to officially apologize to the victims and their families, take measures to restore damages, support memorial projects, and reflect the history in records.
The committee also decided to investigate the 'Human Rights Violations in the Overseas Adoption Process' as a truth verification case.
This case involves 367 individuals adopted from Korea to 11 overseas countries between 1964 and 1999, who applied for investigation claiming that documents were falsified during the adoption process, violating their 'right to know their identity.'
The Truth and Reconciliation Commission made a first decision to verify the truth for 56 applicants and plans to hold a press conference at 10 a.m. on the 26th to announce the findings of the investigation conducted over the past 2 years and 7 months.
