U.S. President Donald Trump has nominated Susan Monarez, the current acting director, as the next director of the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).
According to local media such as CNN on the 24th (local time), Monarez is a veteran who has served as the deputy director of the Advanced Research Projects Agency for Health (ARPA-H), which undertakes innovative research projects with a "high risk, high return" approach.
President Trump introduced her on the social media platform Truth Social, saying, "Dr. Monarez has decades of experience fighting for innovation, transparency, and a strong public health system," adding, "She earned her Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and completed postdoctoral training in microbiology and immunology at Stanford University School of Medicine."
President Trump continued, "Due to political bias and disastrous mismanagement, the CDC has lost trust," and explained, "Dr. Monarez will prioritize accountability, high standards, and disease prevention alongside our excellent Secretary of Health and Human Services, Robert Kennedy Jr."
This announcement came about ten days after the sudden withdrawal of Dave Weldon, who had been nominated as CDC director under the Trump administration.
