This device is remotely managed through real-time monitoring by the Hwaseong-si Traffic Information Center. An artificial intelligence (AI) CCTV is installed at the crosswalk to detect unexpected behaviors of children, such as jaywalking.

Hwaseong-si is attracting attention for enhancing accident prevention effects by operating safety systems that incorporate AI into child protection zones and public buses.

In 2023, the city became the first local government nationwide to introduce and operate the 'AI Smart School Zone Pedestrian Safety System.' This system installs ▲AI CCTV and ▲safety barriers at crosswalks in front of elementary schools, which are remotely managed through real-time monitoring by the Traffic Information Center.

Currently, this system is installed in 36 child protection zones in front of elementary schools within Hwaseong-si. The system not only prevents safety accidents but also alleviates difficulties faced by dual-income parents who feel burdened by traffic safety volunteer duties during school commute times.

Recognized as a model case of administrative innovation, this system has received awards including ▲2024 Local Government Content Awards ▲2023 Gyeonggi-do Active Administration Best Practice Competition Grand Prize ▲2023 Gyeonggi-do Intelligent Transportation System Presentation Contest Excellence Award ▲2023 Manifesto Best Practice Competition Excellence Award.

Since 2023, the city has also introduced an 'AI Safe Driving Solution' on public buses within its jurisdiction. Based on AI video recognition technology, it collects and analyzes 38 driving behaviors that affect traffic accidents, such as failure to maintain a safe distance, forward collision risk, and unauthorized lane departure while the vehicle is in motion.

Based on the analysis results, the city provides monthly driving behavior reports for each public bus driver and conducts customized training. A city official explained, "The analysis results showed that most safety-related indicators of public bus drivers improved compared to before the solution was introduced." This solution received the Minister of the Interior and Safety Award in the public institution innovation category at last year's 'Korea Local Government Management Competition.'

The city plans to hold an event introducing its AI policies from June 18 to 20 at COEX in Gangnam-gu, Seoul. Through the event, the city intends to offer various interactive programs that visitors can participate in directly.

Jung Myung-geun, mayor of Hwaseong-si, stated, "AI-based traffic safety administration reflects our commitment to prioritizing citizens' lives and safety," adding, "We will continue to create changes that citizens can feel through AI."
