Supreme Prosecutors' Office Announces Outstanding Criminal Division Cases for February
A prosecutor who directly investigated and caught a habitual offender who repeatedly received unjust refunds by falsely claiming that bugs were found in delivery food was selected as an outstanding investigation case.
On the 25th, the Supreme Prosecutors' Office announced that Prosecutor Kim Sang-ho (9th Bar Exam), head of the Criminal Division 2 at Seoul Northern District Prosecutors' Office (Chief Prosecutor Choi Jun-ho), was selected as an outstanding case in the criminal division. Prosecutor Kim received the case of Mr. A, who was accused of embezzling a total of 167,300 KRW from seven victims through unjust refund demands, transferred from the police.
Prosecutor Kim found it suspicious that there were dozens of delivery app transactions in Mr. A's account over the course of a month and conducted a supplementary investigation himself, discovering that Mr. A had committed additional crimes worth approximately 7.6 million KRW using similar methods about 300 times.
It was investigated that from 2023 to 2024, Mr. A ordered food through delivery apps and sent the same bug photo to multiple businesses, demanding refunds on the grounds of foreign substances. When the business owners refused refunds, he left false reviews claiming "bugs were found in the food" or threatened to "report to the media."
Eventually, Mr. A was arrested and brought to trial. The Supreme Prosecutors' Office stated the reason for selection was, "By uncovering additional crimes, directly arresting, and prosecuting, they actively responded to crimes targeting small business owners."
In addition, Prosecutor Yoon Jae-hee (10th Bar Exam) of Gangneung Branch Office, who thoroughly investigated stalking and minor sexual assault cases, and Prosecutor Jeon Jin-pyo (Judicial Research and Training Institute 49th class) of Cheongju District Prosecutors' Office were also named in the list of outstanding cases.
The Supreme Prosecutors' Office also selected Prosecutor Lee Pyeong-hwa (9th Bar Exam) of Daejeon District Prosecutors' Office, Prosecutor Lee Jin-soon (40th class) of Daegu District Prosecutors' Office, and Prosecutor Kim Hyun-seo (40th class) of Suncheon Branch Office as outstanding prosecutors, stating they "fulfilled the fundamental duties of the criminal division" by diligently handling long-term unsolved cases.
