Dongdaemun-gu Begins Development of 'Oedae-ssam' English Program for Elementary to Middle School Transition

Dongdaemun-gu (District Mayor Lee Pil-hyung) announced on the 25th that it has officially begun developing the ‘Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (HUFS) Teacher English Bridge’ program to strengthen English education during the transition from elementary to middle school.

‘HUFS Teacher English Bridge’ is a Dongdaemun-gu-style English education program aimed at improving the English skills of elementary students preparing to enter middle school. The English education research team at Hankuk University of Foreign Studies (President Park Jung-woon) develops the curriculum, and HUFS students are selected as ‘HUFS Teachers’ to operate the program.

To this end, the district signed a business agreement with HUFS on February 5 to strengthen English education during the elementary to middle school transition period.

The selected ‘HUFS Teachers’ undergo preliminary training on educational goals, teaching methods, and textbook utilization before conducting classes. Additionally, the HUFS research team directly monitors the classes and continuously provides consulting to ensure standardized professional education.

The district conducted a ‘Parent Preference Survey’ from February 19 to March 9 to fully reflect parents’ opinions. Approximately 231 parents participated, and the results have been actively incorporated from the early stages of program planning.

Through consultations with local elementary school teachers, the students’ English achievement levels were assessed, and discussions with current middle school teachers helped specifically identify difficulties encountered during the transition period English learning, leading to the establishment of appropriate educational goals.

A parent who participated in the survey said, “I heard there is a big gap in the level of English education between elementary and middle school, so I hope there is a program that helps children not to struggle during that process.”

Lee Pil-hyung, Mayor of Dongdaemun-gu, stated, “We will continuously support and encourage students to build confidence in English through the ‘HUFS Teacher English Bridge,’ enjoy learning, and naturally grow into talents equipped with global competencies.”

Meanwhile, the district plans to start operating the program in early August during the elementary school summer vacation, and will sequentially proceed with curriculum development, HUFS Teacher recruitment, and training.
