Chonnam National University deadline on the 21st... Only a handful return
Notice sent to classify expulsion candidates based on academic regulations
Chosun University deadline until the 28th... No signs of students returning
Chonnam National University will begin expulsion procedures for medical students who entered collective leave of absence due to conflicts with medical authorities, despite being notified of the deadline to return.
According to Chonnam National University and others on the 24th, only a very small number of medical students on leave expressed their intention to return by the deadline for re-enrollment applications. On the morning of the same day, Chonnam National University sent a notice to the medical students on collective leave, stating, "Your leave of absence application has been rejected, and if you do not return by the deadline, you will be classified as subject to expulsion."
Previously, on the 10th, Chonnam National University set this date as the return deadline for medical students on leave, based on its academic regulations that require re-enrollment applications within three weeks of the start of the semester. After rejecting the leave of absence applications on the 21st, Chonnam National University is accepting re-enrollment applications offline until 11:50 p.m.
Chonnam National University plans to strictly apply academic regulations and expel students who ultimately do not return. Last year, 653 medical students (88.2% of total enrollment) at Chonnam National University participated in the collective leave of absence, and about 30 students, including those returning from military service, have re-enrolled this semester. However, Chonnam National University has decided not to separately announce the registration and expulsion status of medical students after the re-enrollment application period ends.
A university official stated, "We notified students in advance that they must submit a re-enrollment application, and we sufficiently informed them that they may face disadvantages such as expulsion according to academic regulations," adding, "There will be no extension of the deadline."
Similarly, Chosun University, which recently rejected all medical leave of absence applications, is accepting re-enrollment applications until the 28th, which is one-fourth of the total class days. Medical students on leave at Chosun University also show no significant signs of returning so far. Last year, 676 medical students (90.1%) at Chosun University participated in the collective leave of absence, and about 20 students have re-enrolled this semester.
Meanwhile, the Ministry of Education announced at a regular briefing held at the Government Sejong Complex on this day that "there are no government-level relief measures for medical students who are expelled due to non-registration."
