Hana Bank Participates in Digital Currency Test (Project Hangang) Led by Bank of Korea

Hana Bank announced on the 24th that it will participate in the "Digital Currency Test (Project Hangang)" conducted by the Bank of Korea from April 1 to June 30.

Through this test, the Bank of Korea will issue digital currency to Hana Bank, and Hana Bank will issue deposit tokens based on the digital currency. Digital currency users will be able to convert cash from their deposit accounts under their name into deposit tokens and use them to purchase goods and services at offline stores such as cafes and marts, as well as online stores including home shopping and delivery platforms participating in the test.

Deposit tokens, which hold the same value as cash, are digital assets that convert bank deposits to be handled on the blockchain. They are protected under the depositor protection system and can be converted back into cash.

Since early March, Hana Bank has made various efforts to ensure the stable operation of the deposit token payment system, including conducting beta tests with employees together with participating merchants such as Ediya Coffee and Seven Eleven for this project.

Prior to the official start of real transactions with digital currency scheduled for April 1, Hana Bank will conduct a pre-registration for general users aged 19 and older who hold a Hana Bank demand deposit account through its representative mobile app Hana One Q from March 27 to June 30 to participate in the digital currency test.

Customers who participate in the pre-registration can open a deposit token electronic wallet on the Hana One Q event page, and can easily and conveniently use QR codes generated through the Hana One Q app for deposit token conversion or payment. The total holding limit of the deposit token electronic wallet is 1 million KRW, and the total conversion limit during the test period is up to 5 million KRW.

Hana Bank will also hold events for customers who participate in the general user pre-registration for this digital currency test. All customers who open a deposit token electronic wallet through Hana One Q will receive an eSIM coupon usable at popular overseas travel destinations, and coffee coupons will be given through a lottery.

A Hana Bank official stated, "Through participation in this project, we hope to build a foundation for future currency infrastructure by accumulating new technology capabilities through checking the usability of digital currency," and added, "We will continue to actively respond to changes in the new digital payment environment by participating in various projects that can identify the applicability of private payment system financial infrastructure and related technologies."
