Selected for the National Heritage Administration’s “National Heritage Utilization Project” for Six Consecutive Years, Securing a Total Project Budget of 112.5 Million KRW
The Largest Scale Among Seoul’s Autonomous Districts: Family-Oriented Educational and Tourism Programs Operated from January to December
A coded letter sent by independence fighters has arrived at Jungnang-gu (District Mayor Ryu Kyung-gi).
The "One Coded Letter Sent by Independence Fighters," now in its sixth year, is Jungnang-gu’s representative educational and experiential tourism program, continuously selected for the National Heritage Administration’s "National Heritage Utilization Project" contest.
It is designed to reflect on the significance of the independence movement by utilizing national heritage sites within the region, allowing residents and tourists to experience historical value together.
Since 2020, the district has operated the program centered around the nationally registered cultural heritage site "Mangwoo Independence Patriots’ Cemetery (graves of Seo Gwang-jo, Seo Dong-il, and Oh Jae-young)" and the Seoul City Monument "Achasan Beacon Mound Site (located in Bonghwasan, Jungnang-gu)." In 2022, it was selected as an excellent project for regional cultural heritage utilization by the National Heritage Administration (currently the National Heritage Utilization Excellence Project), receiving the Commissioner’s Award (currently the National Heritage Administration Commissioner’s Award). It also gained high popularity by ranking first in a nationwide online vote for excellent projects.
This year, the project was again recognized for its excellence and selected in the contest, achieving six consecutive years of operation. Accordingly, it secured a total project budget of 112.5 million KRW, the largest among Seoul’s autonomous districts.
The program runs 2 to 8 times per month on weekends from January to December and is tailored by age group, from toddlers to elementary school students. Applications can be made through the Seoul Public Service Reservation website.
The detailed programs are operated in four types considering the interests and educational effects by age group: ▲For toddlers, "Mission! Contact the Independence Fighters" ▲For lower elementary grades, "Mission! Safely Deliver the Independence Fighters’ Secret Letter!" ▲For middle elementary grades, "Mission! Become a Member of the Secret Society" ▲For upper elementary grades, "Mission! Find the Traces of Comrades." These are designed to naturally teach the meaning of the independence movement through play and experience.
Ryu Kyung-gi, Mayor of Jungnang-gu, said, "I am pleased to provide opportunities to easily access and learn about the region’s precious cultural heritage through the vivid national heritage project," adding, "We will continue to develop various contents utilizing cultural heritage to present to residents and tourists, striving to widely promote its meaning and value."
