Around 500 Traditional Markets and Alleyway Commercial Districts in Gyeonggi Province
Promoting Consumption Through Support for "Consumption Certification Payback Events" and More
Gyeonggi Province and the Gyeonggi Market and Commercial District Promotion Agency announced on the 24th that they will hold the ‘2025 Gyeonggi Big Sale’ to revitalize local commercial districts and stimulate consumption, and are recruiting traditional markets and commercial district organizations wishing to participate in the first half of the year.
Last year, Gyeonggi Province and the Promotion Agency conducted the ‘Gyeonggi Big Sale’ twice with a total budget of 4 billion KRW, supporting 348 locations including traditional markets, alleyway commercial districts, and general commercial districts. Reflecting the high satisfaction of local merchants and residents as well as the project’s achievements, this year it will be carried out in two phases, the first half (April) and the second half (October), with a total budget of 10 billion KRW.
For the first half, the goal is to support up to around 500 locations. The detailed support scale includes ▲4 commercial district organizations at the Gyeonggi Province level ▲30 commercial district organizations at the city/county level ▲240 traditional markets, shopping streets, and alley-type shopping streets ▲200 alleyway commercial district communities. They plan to carry out commercial district revitalization events such as ‘Consumption Certification Payback,’ ‘Big Sale Consumption Promotion Coupon Support,’ and ‘Prize Events.’
Last year, general commercial districts that were not registered due to new organization of existing alleyway commercial districts were not eligible to apply for the project, but from this year, if they subscribe to a performance guarantee insurance and form alliances with adjacent traditional markets or alleyway commercial district communities, they can apply. For alleyway commercial districts, online consumption promotion events will also be supported, such as providing ‘Big Sale Consumption Promotion Coupons’ worth 5,000 KRW usable on platforms designated as Gyeonggi Province public delivery apps, including Baedal Teukgeup, Ttaenggeoyo, and Meokkebi.
The Promotion Agency plans to announce the selection results in early April and will simultaneously hold consumption promotion events at traditional markets and alleyway commercial districts across the province for a total of 9 days from April 19 to 27, actively encouraging residents’ participation.
Jung Doo-seok, Director of the Gyeonggi Province Economic Office, said, “This Big Sale held in April, a low season with low sales for small business owners, in addition to the recently frozen consumer sentiment, will be a great help to small business owners struggling with declining sales, and we hope it will also fill the shopping baskets of residents, lightened by high prices, with abundance for a change.”
Kim Min-chul, Director of the Promotion Agency, said, “The Gyeonggi Big Sale is support to restore vitality to traditional markets, alleyway commercial districts, and general commercial districts in the province and to maintain at least a minimal spark amid difficult economic conditions. We will strive to create commercial districts where small business owners and residents can smile together.”
