British Pop Artist Philip Colbert Donates Large-Scale Sculpture 'The Painter' to Seokchon Lake

Pop artist Philip Colbert, who gained great popularity last year at Seokchon Lake with 'Lobster Wonderland,' is returning to 'The Gallery Lake.'

Songpa-gu (Mayor Seo Gang-seok) announced that it will hold a solo exhibition by self-proclaimed 'Lobster Artist' Philip Colbert titled 'Journey to the Lobster Planet' at The Gallery Lake, an art museum at Seokchon Lake, from April 1 to May 11.

Philip Colbert is a leading British pop artist, gaining global attention for his unique works featuring vivid and diverse colors and cartoon elements. Especially through his lobster series, he conveys messages about modern society's self-identity and the role of art, earning the nickname 'the next Andy Warhol.'

In this exhibition, 'Journey to the Lobster Planet,' the artist's signature character 'Lobster Man' takes center stage in works exploring contemporary consumer culture and icons of the digital age. A total of 19 works will be presented, including 10 flat works and 9 sculptures.

Notably, Philip Colbert will donate a large-scale sculpture titled 'The Painter,' which stands 6 meters tall, to Seokchon Lake.

This donation is significant as Colbert personally covered all production and installation costs, marking the first case in the Korean art scene where an artist has borne all expenses to donate a public sculpture.

Colbert first connected with Songpa through a public art project at Seokchon Lake in 2024. He was deeply impressed by the beautiful scenery and energy of Seokchon Lake, which he expressed in the work 'The Painter.'

Seo Gang-seok, Mayor of Songpa-gu, said, "We are very pleased that the works of a world-renowned pop artist will be placed at Seokchon Lake. This exhibition and donation will serve as an opportunity for Songpa-gu to grow into an international art city," adding, "Furthermore, we will create an environment where all Songpa residents can enjoy culture and arts anytime and live a rich life."
