Democratic Party to Promote Resolution for Swift Constitutional Court Ruling via Plenary Committee
Tent Party Headquarters to Be Set Up in Gwanghwamun
Choi Sang-mok's Impeachment a "Decision to Uphold the Constitutional Order"
Park Chan-dae, the floor leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, urged the Constitutional Court on the 23rd to make a swift ruling regarding the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol. To this end, the Democratic Party proposed a response strategy including the installation of a tent party headquarters and the promotion of a resolution through the National Assembly's plenary committee.
At a press briefing at the National Assembly on the same day, Floor Leader Park said, "As the Constitutional Court's ruling is delayed, public anxiety and social confusion are intensifying, and economic damage is increasing," adding, "It is time for the Constitutional Court to firmly make a decision without evading its duty to protect the constitutional order and democracy. We urge an immediate dismissal decision, even on the 25th."
After listing the reasons for the necessity of President Yoon's dismissal, he emphasized, "To overturn all of this and grant Yoon Seok-yeol a pardon is a death sentence for the Republic of Korea," and added, "Unless the Constitutional Court intends to destroy the constitutional order and turn Korea into a dictatorship rife with terrorism, the only unanimous decision it can make is dismissal."
Regarding the background of President Yoon's declaration of martial law, he said, "As the disclosure of the golden phone, the key evidence in the Myeongtaegyun Gate, approached, Yoon Seok-yeol declared martial law," and stated, "The essence of martial law is a 'personal coup' to cover up the ugly crimes of the Yoon Seok-yeol-Kim Geon-hee couple, namely illegal and corrupt acts such as public opinion manipulation, election fraud, stock price manipulation, and state affairs meddling."
Regarding future party-level responses, he said, "We will promote a resolution urging a swift ruling and a plenary committee to handle it," and added, "The Democratic Party will install and operate a tent party headquarters in Gwanghwamun starting tomorrow."
Regarding the impeachment of Choi Sang-mok, Acting Prime Minister and Minister of Strategy and Finance, he reaffirmed his intention to proceed. Floor Leader Park described Choi's impeachment as "a decision to uphold the constitutional order," and argued, "Establishing the principle that anyone who violates the constitutional order will be punished is the way to restore the constitution that was broken by the December 3rd insurrection."
Regarding the schedule for Choi's impeachment, Floor Leader Park said, "After the proposal, it must be reported at the first plenary session and voted on within 72 hours. We are currently consulting with the Speaker's office to set the date for the plenary session, as early approval is best." Kim Yong-min, the Democratic Party's deputy floor leader, explained, "Despite the Constitutional Court's judgment, Choi did not appoint a Constitutional Court justice," and added, "This is a more serious matter than Prime Minister Han Duck-soo."
Meanwhile, regarding the proposal by lawmakers in their 30s and 40s from both ruling and opposition parties at a press conference to allocate more than half of the Pension Reform Special Committee to people in their 30s and 40s and to support pension funds with national treasury funds, Floor Leader Park said, "We view it positively," and added, "We will look for ways to accommodate it."
