As the Constitutional Court's ruling on the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol continues to be delayed day after day, citizens of Gwangju gathered at the May 18 Democracy Plaza to urge for his prompt removal from office.

The Gwangju Emergency Action for Yoon Suk-yeol's Immediate Resignation and Social Reform (Gwangju Emergency Action), which is comprised of around 180 civic organizations, held the 19th Gwangju Citizens' General Rally at the May 18 Democracy Plaza in Dong-gu, Gwangju on this day.

Approximately 2,000 citizens, including Gwangju Mayor Kang Gijung, attended the rally, according to the organizers. The event proceeded with an opening declaration, speeches, performances, and on-site interviews.

Citizens held placards with slogans such as "Immediate Removal of Yoon Suk-yeol" and "Punish the Forces Supporting Rebellion," chanting their demands.

Father Cho Youngdae, who took the stage that day, said, "Thinking about the unconstitutional nature of the rebellion and the reality the people have to endure because of it, I hope the court will not be bound by procedural issues and will deliver a just verdict soon," adding, "The Constitutional Court must uphold the impeachment without delay. Please save the people from extreme anxiety and chaos."

Another citizen said, "It is absurd that we are now worried about whether impeachment will happen or not, following the martial law situation," adding, "I hope the Constitutional Court makes a ruling as soon as possible so that we can finally sleep peacefully."

Gwangju Emergency Action has been holding the Gwangju Citizens' General Rally every Saturday since the martial law situation. Since President Yoon's detention was revoked, they have been holding overnight rallies every day.
