Pro-Impeachment and Anti-Impeachment Rallies Held Across Downtown Seoul Over the Weekend

Amid expectations that the impeachment ruling of President Yoon Suk-yeol is imminent, rallies both supporting and opposing the impeachment were held across Seoul on the 22nd.

At around 1 p.m. that day, an anti-impeachment rally centered on supporters of President Yoon was held around Gwanghwamun. The Korea Righting Movement Headquarters (Daegukbon), led by Pastor Jeon Gwang-hoon, and the men's group Shin Namseong Yeondae held separate rallies near Exit 5 of Anguk Station on Subway Line 3.


As of 2 p.m., unofficial police estimates put the number of participants at the two rallies at approximately 26,000 and 3,000 respectively. Participants holding Taegeukgi and American flags shouted slogans such as "Impeachment Null and Void" and "President Yoon Suk-yeol," while Shin Namseong Yeondae marched toward Daehanmun.


At the same time, a rally of President Yoon’s supporters organized by the Christian group Save Korea was held in the Yeouido area. The unofficial police estimate was 25,000 participants.


The Candlelight Action, which has been urging the dismissal of President Yoon, held a rally at 3 p.m. in front of Exit 1 of Anguk Station near the Constitutional Court. They held hand placards reading "Immediate Dismissal of Yoon Suk-yeol" and "Suppress the Internal Enemy," shouting slogans such as "Dismiss Yoon Suk-yeol" and "Disband the People Power Party."


After the rally, Candlelight Action and others marched to Dongshipjag of Gyeongbokgung Palace to join the rally hosted by the Emergency Action for Immediate Resignation of Yoon Suk-yeol and Social Reform (Emergency Action), which started at 5 p.m. The number of participants reported to the police was 100,000.


The Korean Confederation of Trade Unions (KCTU), which has called for a general strike urging the swift ruling on President Yoon’s impeachment case, held a rally in front of the Seoul Regional Employment and Labor Office that day and demanded the immediate dismissal of President Yoon.
