In a Five-Minute Speech:
"Only Chungnam Lacks a Physical Education Middle School,
Putting Student Athletes at a Disadvantage"
Councilor Yoon Ilsun of Hongseong County Council urging the establishment of a sports middle school in Hongseong County through a 5-minute free speech session
Yoon Ilsun, a member of the Hongseong County Council in Chungnam (representing Hongseong-eup), stated on the 21st, "Establishing a physical education middle school in Chungnam is an urgent task that can no longer be delayed," and urged, "Hongseong County, as the location of the provincial government, should take the lead in attracting a physical education middle school."
During the 311th temporary session of the Hongseong County Council held in the main assembly hall that morning, Yoon delivered a five-minute speech on the theme "The dream of happy student athletes begins at a physical education middle school," making this assertion.
According to Yoon, among the 17 metropolitan cities and provinces nationwide, only Chungnam has not yet seriously discussed the establishment of a physical education middle school, resulting in student athletes with special talents in sports within the province being unable to receive customized training and basic education properly.
He pointed out, "Currently, Chungnam has 910 registered school athletes under the age of 15, which is more than Daegu, Jeonbuk, Jeonnam, Gwangju, Daejeon, and Ulsan, all of which already operate physical education middle schools, yet Chungnam has none." He added, "Due to the limited facilities and standardized curriculum of regular middle schools, only students in Chungnam are at a disadvantage."
He continued, "Hongseong County has sufficient competitiveness to attract a physical education middle school," emphasizing the county's ample sports infrastructure, such as being the main venue for the 2029 National Sports Festival, the second KBO-standard baseball stadium (scheduled for completion in 2026), the construction of the Chungnam International Tennis Center, and the upcoming opening of the Naepo Chungnam Sports Center.
He further suggested, "Hongseong County, as the location of the Chungnam Provincial Government, has excellent accessibility, and if a physical education middle school is established, utilizing the vacant site of the former Hongseong Girls' High School will not only reduce costs but also help prevent the hollowing out of the old downtown area."
Yoon emphasized, "Hongseong County and Chungnam Province must pay attention and actively step forward so that every student athlete can grow into a happy sports professional, even if they do not all win gold medals."
