Proactive Management in Response to Increased Passengers and Worsening Weather Conditions
Mokpo Maritime Police Station (Chief Kwon Oseong) announced on the 21st that it will implement proactive safety management measures for multi-use vessels for 76 days until May 31.
With the arrival of the spring excursion season, the number of passengers using multi-use vessels is expected to increase. Due to low visibility caused by spring fog and worsening weather conditions, the risk of maritime accidents is heightened. This initiative aims to prevent accidents and eradicate behaviors that compromise safety.

Last spring (March to May), the number of passengers on fishing vessels was approximately 24,000, an increase of about 23% compared to winter. Of the 70 fishing vessel accidents that occurred over the past three years, 12 happened during the spring season, accounting for about 17% of the total.
In response, the maritime police will maintain an organic cooperation system among the Maritime Traffic Control Center (VTS), situation room, police substations, and patrol vessels. After a publicity and guidance period until the 20th of next month, a special crackdown on behaviors that compromise fishing vessel safety will be conducted from the 21st to May 31.
The main focus of the crackdown includes ▲overloading ▲operating under the influence ▲not wearing life jackets ▲illegal fishing outside territorial waters ▲false entry and exit reports by disguised crew members ▲violations of fishing prohibition zones, among others. In addition, intensive safety inspections will be carried out on aging ferries and cruise ships to ensure preventive safety management.
A Mokpo Maritime Police official stated, "With the spring excursion season upon us, it is essential for both multi-use vessel operators and passengers to voluntarily comply with safety regulations to ensure safe and enjoyable maritime activities," adding, "The maritime police will do their utmost to prevent casualties through proactive preventive activities and crackdowns."
