Jangsu County Holds Arbor Day Commemoration Event and Promotes Wildfire Prevention

Planting Chestnut, Apple Jujube, Cherry, Apricot, and Plum Trees

Jangsu County in North Jeolla Province held the 80th Arbor Day commemorative event and wildfire prevention campaign on the 21st at San 51, Seonchang-ri, Jangsu-eup.

According to the county, the event was held earlier than usual due to rising temperatures caused by global warming, and was attended by over 250 people, including public officials and County Governor Choi Hunsik.

Participants planted 2,340 sawtooth oak trees, which are a major afforestation species designated by the Korea Forest Service, as well as 500 fruit trees (chestnut, apple jujube, cherry, apricot, and plum) over an area of 1.78 hectares. In addition, 200 fruit trees were distributed free of charge to participants as part of the "Own Your Tree" campaign, emphasizing the importance of tree planting.

The county plans to promote economic and regionally specialized afforestation projects covering 165 hectares this year, as well as forest management projects over 1,080 hectares, in order to create valuable forest resources in response to the increasingly serious issue of climate change. The county is also making every effort to prevent wildfires, which are occurring simultaneously across the country, through wildfire monitoring and awareness campaigns.

County Governor Choi Hunsik said, "The importance and value of forests are increasing due to abnormal weather events such as fine dust and heat waves," and added, "We hope that by carefully nurturing and creating forests, we can contribute to generating both economic and public value."
