According to Gimpo City on the 21st, the city is determined to accelerate the development of talent in science and engineering fields amid a series of major projects such as Gimpo Hangang 2 Compact City and Gimpo Environmental Regeneration Innovation Complex.

Accordingly, the city plans to sign an agreement on the 26th with Gimpo Science and Technology High School to foster a specialized high school through a partnership. Through this agreement, the city aims to apply for the Ministry of Education’s specialized high school partnership program.

If selected as a Ministry of Education specialized partnership high school, the school can receive up to 4.5 billion KRW in special grants over five years. Additionally, it will be granted autonomy in organizing and operating the curriculum similar to autonomous private high schools, and the maximum credit limit will be lifted. Furthermore, there are advantages such as one-on-one customized consulting and incentives.

As Gimpo City is actively working as a leading city in UAM, there is an expectation that the UAM education program will be the most specialized program that Gimpo can excel in. Gimpo City was the first local government to enact a UAM ordinance and has taken the lead in realizing UAM through a business agreement with the Korea Testing Laboratory (KTL).

Last June, the city held a forum to publicize the UAM industry together with key players in the UAM ecosystem. This forum, organized as a cooperative body consisting of local governments, experts, related organizations, and companies, aimed to explore strategies for industry development. At the forum, Kim Se-jong, President of the Korea Testing Laboratory, stated, “Gimpo City is adjacent to Seoul and located along the West Sea area, making it a key location from multiple perspectives. Especially as a testbed for urban air mobility, Gimpo City, bordering the riverside, is the optimal site.”

Mayor Kim Byung-su said, “If you don’t try, there will be no results, and opportunities must be seized when they come. Don’t be discouraged by failure; keep challenging until you succeed. If we attract a specialized partnership high school following the establishment of an education special zone and autonomous public high school, Gimpo City can be branded as a premium education city nurturing future talent.” He added, “We will actively work to cultivate scientific and technological talent and establish Gimpo as a prestigious city. In the future, Gimpo will transform into a city where students come on educational expeditions by taking Line 2 from Mok-dong.”

Meanwhile, since the launch of the 8th term of the civilian government, Gimpo City has been changing the educational landscape through numerous achievements such as the designation of an education development special zone, selection of a regionally specialized autonomous public high school, signing a business agreement with Seoul City for Seoul Run, and educational cooperation with Yonsei University. These significant changes in Gimpo’s education during the 8th term are known to be the result of Mayor Kim Byung-su’s firm conviction and planning ability combined with the professionalism of public officials.
