Gwangju Seo-gu Improves 'Traffic Safety Facilities' in Children's Protection Zones

Eight Locations, Including Geumbu Elementary and Uncheon Elementary, Selected

Gwangju Seo-gu (District Mayor Kim Ikang) is set to actively promote a project to improve traffic safety facilities within school zones.


According to Seo-gu on the 21st, this project has been prepared to create safer routes to and from school for children. Out of the 71 school zones in the district, eight areas vulnerable to traffic safety issues (Geumbu Elementary School, Uncheon Elementary School, Chipyeong Elementary School, Gwangjuseo Elementary School, Hwajeongnam Elementary School, Unri Elementary School, Sangmu Elementary School, and Bitgoeul Kindergarten) have been selected as priorities for phased improvements.

Seo-gu plans to invest a total budget of 900 million KRW to reinforce road surfaces with enhanced anti-slip features, install protective fences to safeguard children in case vehicles veer off the road, and focus on improving visibility for both pedestrians and drivers during nighttime or cloudy weather.


In addition, Seo-gu will actively cooperate with related organizations such as the National Police Agency to eliminate blind spots within school zones. To this end, they plan to request the installation of speed enforcement cameras and intersection traffic signals to maximize the prevention of traffic accidents.


Kim Ikang, Mayor of Seo-gu, stated, "Creating an environment where children can go to school safely is the responsibility of all of us," and added, "We will continuously maintain and improve traffic safety facilities within school zones to ensure that both students and parents can feel at ease on their way to and from school."
