The signing ceremony was attended by about 50 people, including Lee Gwon-jae, Mayor of Osan, Choi Won-cheol, Mayor of Gongju, private organizations from both cities, and related officials. The agreement includes ▲ joint cooperation to revitalize local tourism ▲ mutual understanding enhancement through exchanges in history, culture, and arts.
This sister city cooperation is said to be based on the historical connection between the two cities. Osan is known to have been fortified during the Baekje King Onjo era and has historical sites such as Doksanseong and Semaeji, where General Kwon Yul was active during the Imjin War. Gongju City also has Gongsanseong Fortress and the Tomb of King Muryeong, which are part of the Baekje Historic Areas and designated as World Heritage sites.
Mayor Lee Gwon-jae said, "Let us promote mutual visits through sharing policies, operating direct markets for local specialties, and offering discounts on tourist site admission fees," adding, "Active exchanges between the two cities will lay the foundation for mutual growth between the regions." Mayor Choi Won-cheol also expressed hope that "many Osan citizens will visit Gongju City through the sister city exchange activities."
