Safety Inspections of Railway Facilities in Gangwon Region
KORAIL strengthens safety measures against rockfalls during thawing season
KORAIL announced on the 20th that it has begun safety inspections of railway facilities in the Gangwon region in preparation for the thawing season.
Han Moon-hee, President of KORAIL, recently inspected a section near Ssangryong Station on the Taebaek Line in Yeongwol-gun, Gangwon, where rockfalls are likely to occur, and conducted safety checks in preparation for the thawing season.

KORAIL operates a wireless communication-based intelligent video surveillance system to ensure railway safety. President Han emphasized the need to detect and respond to risk factors in real time by utilizing advanced technologies such as drones and artificial intelligence (AI) CCTV while inspecting the site.
KORAIL has installed CCTVs capable of real-time monitoring at 156 railway sites nationwide, including 34 locations on the Taebaek Line. Through the intelligent video surveillance system, if an obstacle is detected on the tracks, an automatic alert is sent to nearby trains and stations to enable immediate action.
KORAIL plans to implement slow train operations on certain sections of the Taebaek Line with rockfall concerns until the end of May.
President Han stated, "We will actively utilize advanced IT technologies such as drones to strengthen facility safety inspections and thoroughly prepare to prevent any train operation disruptions caused by rockfalls during the thawing season."
