Naju City in Jeollanam-do is seeking victims and bereaved families of the Yeosu-Suncheon 10.19 Incident (Yeosun Incident).
According to Naju City on the 19th, an amendment to the enforcement decree of the Special Act for the Fact-Finding and Restoration of Honor for Victims of the Yeosun Incident was approved at the Cabinet meeting on March 11.
Accordingly, from the 18th until August 31, reports of victims and bereaved families of the Yeosun Incident will be accepted at Eup, Myeon, and Dong Administrative Welfare Centers.
The incident refers to the armed conflict that occurred from October 19, 1948, to April 1, 1955, when some soldiers stationed in Yeosu refused orders to suppress the Jeju 4.3 Incident, resulting in the deaths of many civilians.
Those eligible to report are people who died or went missing due to the Yeosun Incident, those who suffered aftereffects or were imprisoned, as well as their bereaved families.
Victims and bereaved families residing in Jeollanam-do can visit their nearest city, county, or Eup, Myeon, Dong office, or submit the report by mail.
Those residing outside Jeollanam-do can visit or mail their report to the Jeollanam-do Yeosun Incident Support Group.
Once the report is received, a fact-finding investigation will be conducted based on the reported content, and the Yeosun Incident Support Group's working committee will review the investigation results.
Afterwards, the Committee for Fact-Finding and Restoration of Honor for Victims of the Yeosun Incident will conduct a final review and resolution, and notify the reporter of the decision.
Yoon Byungtae, Mayor of Naju, stated, "The victims and bereaved families of the Yeosun Incident have lived in silence, carrying the pain of unjust deaths and scars in their hearts, enduring indescribable sorrow," and added, "I hope that through this additional fact-finding and victim reporting, the honor of the victims and their families will be fully restored."
