Gwangjucheon Cleanliness Campaign Also Planned
Gwangju City announced on the 19th that it will hold the "2025 World Water Day Commemorative Event" on the 21st at the Gwangjucheon Dumulmeori, with more than 100 participants including representatives from the five districts and Gwangju Environmental Corporation, to celebrate the 33rd World Water Day.
World Water Day was designated on March 22 by the 47th United Nations General Assembly in 1992 to recognize the value of water and promote its preservation and management. Since 1995, Korea has been holding commemorative ceremonies and related events.
This year, Korea's official theme for World Water Day is "Securing Water Resources for the Future in the Era of Climate Crisis," which is linked to the UN-designated theme of "Glacier Preservation." The theme emphasizes the need for participation and efforts from various stakeholders to respond to the water crisis caused by climate change.
After the commemorative event, citizens, students, civic groups, and public officials will participate in activities to improve the water quality of Gwangjucheon, such as throwing EM (Effective Microorganisms) mud balls (made by mixing beneficial microorganisms and loess) and joining the "Sseudam Sseudam Cleanliness Campaign," which involves picking up litter while walking.
Additionally, there will be a walking exercise session with health leaders and a health promotion booth to raise awareness about the importance of healthy living practices such as walking, as well as an obesity prevention campaign to encourage the formation of healthy lifestyle habits.
Jung Hyun-yoon, Director of the Climate and Environment Bureau, stated, "We hope that this World Water Day commemorative event will serve as a reminder of the importance of water, lead to the practice of water conservation and protection, and result in sustainable water resource management."
