A council to lead research and development in the field of greenhouse gas emissions has been established.
On the 19th, the Ministry of Environment announced that it officially launched the "Greenhouse Gas-Intensive Industry Research and Development (R&D) Council" and held an inaugural meeting at the LW Convention in Jung-gu, Seoul, together with the Korea Environmental Industry & Technology Institute. The council plans to identify the difficulties companies face in the process of reducing greenhouse gases and discuss R&D support measures to resolve these issues with the industry.
The council includes related associations and research unions representing greenhouse gas-intensive industries such as the Korea Chemical Industry Association, Korea Cement Association, Korea Semiconductor Industry Association, Korea Display Industry Association, Korea Metal Materials Research Association, as well as 17 companies and environmental technology experts.
At the inaugural meeting, discussions were held on sharing the latest carbon-neutral technology market information to achieve the "Nationally Determined Contribution (NDC)" for greenhouse gas reduction, discussing industry-specific necessary technologies for reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and discovering public-private cooperative technology development projects. Technologies identified by the council will undergo consultation with the "Environmental R&D Innovation Committee" before concrete project planning is pursued.
Seo Young-tae, Director of the Green Transition Policy Division at the Ministry of Environment, stated, "Technology development for greenhouse gas reduction will provide opportunities to lead the industry in the future," adding, "We will promote proactive technology development through public-private cooperation and expand various policy supports to activate this."
