Choi Hyunsook, Daegu Suseong District Council Member: "The Term 'Senior Center' Is Inappropriate for a Super-Aged Society"... Name Should Be Changed to Something More Open

Choi Hyunsook, a proportional representative council member of the Suseong District Council in Daegu (People Power Party), raised the need to change the name of "Gyeongrodang" to better suit the era of super-aging during her five-minute free speech at the 269th temporary session held on the 17th.

In her speech, Council Member Choi stated, "Korea has already entered a super-aged society, and Suseong District is also about to become one, with the elderly population ratio reaching 19.35%." She emphasized, "With changing social perceptions, it is necessary to move beyond the existing notion that 'Gyeongrodang' is a space only for a specific age group and to change it to a more open and inclusive name."

She pointed out that several local governments are already operating with new names such as 'Senior Welfare Center,' 'Silver Welfare and Culture Center,' and 'Happiness Center.' She suggested that Suseong District should also review the name of Gyeongrodang in line with these changes, expand its functions, and develop it into a community space where various generations can come together.

Furthermore, Choi stressed that changing the name of Gyeongrodang is not just a simple revision of terminology but an important starting point to enhance the self-esteem of seniors and to activate communication and exchange within the local community. She requested that a new name be selected through a process of public discussion and that the term 'senior' be actively reflected in Suseong District's official documents and administrative terminology.

Choi also stated, "Gyeongrodang should evolve beyond a simple resting place to become a complex cultural space where seniors can learn, communicate, and enjoy a healthy later life." She called for active discussion and support to improve the quality of life for seniors and to promote intergenerational exchange.
