Proposing an Innovative Model for Fostering and Globalizing the Age-Tech Industry
for the Glocal University 30 Initiative
Dong-Eui University (President Han Suhwan) announced plans to concentrate the university's capabilities on revitalizing and globalizing the Age-Tech industry, linking the university's areas of strength with Busan City's strategic industries, in order to be selected for the "2025 Glocal University 30" initiative.
Dong-Eui University is proposing the vision of becoming a "K-AgeTech Leading University, Leaping from Busan to the World" for the Glocal University 30 project. The university aims to connect its specialized fields?biohealth, public and social welfare, tourism and convention, and smart IT manufacturing technology?with Busan's strategic industries such as biohealth, lifestyle, culture and tourism, digital tech, and convergence component materials. Through this, the university plans to foster the local Age-Tech industry ecosystem and promote regional economic revitalization by advancing into the global market.
Age-Tech refers to products and services that integrate advanced technologies such as artificial intelligence, the Internet of Things, robotics, and biotechnology to improve the quality of life for the elderly. It is an emerging industry expected to see significant global growth, currently in the early stages of market formation and technological development worldwide.
Currently, South Korea is entering a super-aged society. In particular, Busan faces threats to its status as the nation's second-largest city due to a vicious cycle of youth out-migration caused by a lack of quality jobs and the country's lowest birth rate.
Recently, Dong-Eui University set its vision as "A university that grows with students, a university that develops with the local community." In line with this vision, the university plans to address regional challenges and the societal issue of super-aging by integrating new technologies such as big data, artificial intelligence, and robotics?developed in preparation for the Fourth Industrial Revolution?with its four major areas of strength, including traditional excellence in Korean medicine.
Notably, Dong-Eui University has been recognized for its contributions to local healthcare for over 30 years through the operation of Dong-Eui Medical Center and its affiliated Korean medicine hospital, excelling in fields such as nursing, physical therapy, radiology, clinical pathology, and dental hygiene.
Recently, the university has also been acknowledged for its research capabilities, including participation in the Ministry of Education's Biohealth Innovation Convergence University Project to foster core talent in new technology fields, operation of the "Core Research Support Center for Biotissue Regeneration" as part of the Ministry's basic science research capacity enhancement project to secure the top 10 smart aging core technologies, and holding numerous related patents through the Smart Rehabilitation Welfare Technology Research Institute and the Anti-Aging Research Institute.
Additionally, in support of "AI Future City Busan," Dong-Eui University possesses advanced AI convergence technology across various fields, including the operation of the AI Grand ICT Research Center?supported by the Ministry of Science and ICT and Busan City?to advance smart city, robotics, and medical healthcare technologies.
President Han Suhwan stated, "Through the revitalization of the Age-Tech industry, Dong-Eui University will take the lead in creating an environment where the increasing elderly population can enjoy healthy and convenient lives and where high-quality jobs allow outstanding young talent to settle in the region, helping Busan regain its vibrancy as Korea's second city."
