The KBS Symphony Orchestra and pianist Son Min-su will collaborate again after about six months to perform Brahms' piano concerto.
The KBS Symphony Orchestra will perform Brahms' "Piano Concerto No. 1" and Richard Strauss' "Ein Heldenleben" at the 812th regular concert held at the Seoul Arts Center Concert Hall on the 21st at 8 p.m.
Pianist Son Min-su will appear as the soloist. Son Min-su also performed Brahms' piano concerto with the KBS Symphony Orchestra at the 805th regular concert in September last year. He performed No. 2 in September last year, and this time he will perform No. 1. After this performance, he will have performed both of Brahms' piano concertos.
Son Min-su is well known as the teacher of pianist Lim Yoon-chan. Since the fall semester of 2023, he has been serving as a professor at the New England Conservatory in Boston, USA, nurturing the next generation of musicians.
The "Ein Heldenleben" performed in the second half is a symphonic poem containing Strauss's autobiographical story, consisting of six scenes: Part 1 "The Hero," Part 2 "The Hero's Adversaries," Part 3 "The Hero's Companion," Part 4 "The Hero on the Battlefield," Part 5 "The Hero's Achievements," and Part 6 "The Hero's Solitude and Accomplishment." It is a masterpiece praised for its grand orchestration and diverse instrumentation, allowing listeners to experience Strauss's unique musical world.
Yoel Levi, who served as the 8th music director of the KBS Symphony Orchestra from 2014 to 2019, will conduct.
Conductor Levi conducted "Ein Heldenleben" at the KBS Symphony Orchestra's 723rd regular concert in 2017 while serving as the music director.
A KBS Symphony Orchestra official said, "This is a special concert where you can enjoy masterpieces by Brahms and Strauss on one stage," adding, "The profound interpretation of Brahms by pianist Son Min-su and the clear interpretation by conductor Yoel Levi will come together to present an impressive performance."
