Lee Jaemyung, leader of the Democratic Party of Korea, will visit the memorial altar of a party member (head of the Unam 3-dong Council, Gwangju Buk-gu Eul Regional Committee) who collapsed and died while holding a picket protest calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Sukyeol on the 18th.
According to the Gwangju City branch of the Democratic Party, Lee plans to visit Gwangju this afternoon to pay his respects at the memorial altar of the late Shin Sanggil, who died during an impeachment protest. Shin collapsed during a picket protest in Unam-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju the previous day and was taken to the hospital, but passed away. Since receiving a terror threat tip-off on the 12th, Lee had refrained from outside activities, but after careful consideration, decided to pay his respects to Shin.
Through his Facebook page, Lee said, "My heart breaks at the news that a comrade who was more devoted than anyone has left our side," and added, "This happened because the people themselves had to do what politics should have done. If the representatives of the people had fulfilled their roles, this would not have happened."
Lee also stated, "I will faithfully carry on your will," and continued, "Please entrust the remaining tasks to me and the party, and rest in peace there. I offer my heartfelt condolences to the bereaved family and the comrades of the Gwangju City branch, who must be in deep sorrow."
Meanwhile, after visiting Shin's memorial altar, Lee will visit the hunger strike protest site at 5.18 Democracy Plaza at 6:30 p.m. to encourage city and district council members participating in the "Immediate Dismissal of Yoon Sukyeol Hunger Strike Protest Group." He is also scheduled to attend the "Immediate Dismissal of Yoon Sukyeol" Gwangju Emergency Action rally at 7 p.m. at 5.18 Democracy Plaza.
