Condolences from Political Circles... Lee Jae-myung: "My Heart Breaks"
A man in his 60s who collapsed and died during a picket protest calling for the impeachment of President Yoon Seok-yeol in Gwangju has been revealed to be a figure who dedicated decades to community service. The Gwangju Metropolitan City Party of the Democratic Party of Korea decided to hold his funeral at the party level in honor of his noble spirit.
According to the Democratic Party of Korea's Gwangju Metropolitan City Party on the 18th, the late Shin Sang-gil, chairman of the Bodeumina Numui Volunteer Association, who died during the protest calling for President Yoon's impeachment, was a person who practiced sharing through various activities in volunteer organizations such as Saemaeul in Hwajeong 4-dong, Gwangju, and the Bodeumina Numui Volunteer Association affiliated with the Gwangju Seo-gu Volunteer Center.
The Democratic Party of Korea's Gwangju Metropolitan City Party stated, "In particular, the late Chairman Shin Sang-gil passionately served as the chairman of the Unam 3-dong council in the Buk-gu Eul district committee. He was a long-time member of the Democratic Party who devoted himself to protecting democracy during national crises and contributed greatly to the party, receiving a first-class award from the party leader."
They added, "We will remember his noble spirit of sacrifice," and "We have decided to hold the funeral of the late Chairman Shin Sang-gil as the 'Democratic Party of Korea Gwangju Metropolitan City Party Funeral.'"
The day before, around 8:13 a.m., Chairman Shin collapsed in a state of cardiac arrest at an intersection in Unam-dong, Buk-gu, Gwangju. He was transported to the hospital by fire authorities who responded to the emergency call but ultimately passed away. Chairman Shin, a Democratic Party member, was conducting a picket protest on the street that day, calling for President Yoon's impeachment.
According to Jeonnam Ilbo, Chairman Shin began volunteer activities in 1988 and took on difficult tasks at disaster sites such as during the Sewol ferry disaster.
Messages of condolence for Chairman Shin are pouring in from the political sphere. Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, expressed his condolences on Facebook that day, saying, "My heart breaks at the news that a comrade who devoted himself more passionately than anyone else has left us." Gwangju Mayor Kang Ki-jung also said, "(The deceased) was greatly angered by the declaration of martial law and was distressed by the delay in the impeachment ruling. We will fulfill the impeachment task left as his last will."
