[On Site, This Person] Moon Jiseon, Head Nurse at Gwangju Hospital..."Establishing the Status of Nurses" Moon Jiseon, Head of Nursing at Gwangju Hospital, received the Korea Nurses Association President's Commendation Award at the 36th Gwangju Nurses Association Regular Delegate Meeting held on the 14th at the Holiday Inn Gwangju Hotel.

"The profession of nursing is one that can help everyone in our society and is absolutely essential. I always feel a sense of fulfillment."

Moon Jiseon, the head nurse at Gwangju Hospital (age 55), is a veteran nurse who has been in charge of operating rooms and administrative duties at a regional general hospital for 32 years since 1992. She also serves as an adjunct professor at a university, teaching adult nursing to future nurses who aspire to study nursing, and is devoted to nurturing the next generation.

Reflecting on her 30-plus years as a nurse, Moon described the profession as "rewarding and a source of pride, requiring a spirit of service, professional knowledge, and ethical awareness."

From a young age, she dreamed only of becoming a nurse. The fact that it is a profession essential to society and one that can help others was a great attraction for her. For the first 20 years, she worked tirelessly as a nurse in the operating room, but seeing patients leave after treatment and thanking her made her decide to dedicate her life to nursing.

Moon explained, "People often think of nursing as a tough job because of the three-shift system and caring for patients, but I have never felt it was difficult while caring for sick patients," adding, "It is the most essential organization in society, and it is a profession that requires a professional spirit where you must constantly develop yourself by learning everything from mental management to professional knowledge."

Moon is devoted to nurturing future nurses by teaching adult nursing at a local nursing college. In particular, since 2016 she has contributed to the advancement of nursing work by serving as a board member of the Korean Nurses Association and as president of the Gwangju Buk-gu Nurses Association since 2017, striving to ensure that her juniors can work in better environments.

She also continues to provide education at the Nurse Workforce Employment and Education Centers located in each branch of the Korean Nurses Association. These centers offer practical training to help inactive nurses, whose careers have been interrupted by long-term leave such as childcare, return to the field. Moon directly participates as an instructor to support nurses' reemployment, and in 2019, she was recognized for her contributions with an award from the Minister of Health and Welfare.

She has also been at the forefront of efforts to enact the Nursing Act, which defines the roles, expertise, rights, and duties of nurses. In this way, Moon continues to be active in proposing policy alternatives for a successful future in nursing and improving the treatment and rights of nurses. On the 14th, she received a merit award from the Korean Nurses Association.

Moon stated, "The medical community is currently in a very difficult situation, so I want to continue contributing to the enhancement of nursing quality and the advancement of nursing work to establish the status of nurses," adding, "I plan to listen to and address the practical difficulties faced in the field so that future nurses can be proud of their profession."
