"Farm Owners Urged to Thoroughly Disinfect to Prevent Introduction of Livestock Infectious Diseases"
Boseong County in Jeollanam-do has taken swift action to block and prevent foot-and-mouth disease (FMD) within its jurisdiction, following recent outbreaks in Yeongam and the spread of type O FMD to Muan County.
According to the county on the 17th, all available resources including public officials, contract veterinarians, and the Livestock Cooperative's joint quarantine team have been mobilized to conduct a mass FMD vaccination campaign and to carry out intensive disinfection targeting small-scale farms, putting full effort into disease control.
The vaccination targets in the Boseong area include 976 farms with approximately 67,000 animals (30,000 cattle, 25,000 pigs, and 12,000 goats). Large-scale farms are responsible for vaccinating their own livestock, while small-scale farms receive vaccination support from contract veterinarians. This round of vaccinations is scheduled to be completed by the 21st.
To ensure rapid vaccination, the county is providing vaccines free of charge through the Agricultural and Livestock Division at the county office. In particular, small-scale farms with fewer than 100 animals are vaccinated by contract veterinarians, while large-scale farms with 100 or more animals are required to carry out the vaccinations themselves.
Post-vaccination inspections to confirm vaccination status will also be thoroughly implemented. After vaccination, SP antibody positivity monitoring tests will be conducted, and farms with antibody formation rates below 80% for cattle or 60% for goats will be fined and ordered to revaccinate, with follow-up inspections to be conducted one month later.
The county also plans to ensure that all cloven-hoofed livestock farms complete vaccination without exception, and to strengthen vehicle disinfection at livestock markets and key disinfection facilities, aiming to maintain the reputation of "FMD-free Clean Boseong."
County Governor Kim Cheolwoo stated, "We ask that farm owners familiarize themselves with the vaccination procedures and complete vaccinations as soon as possible upon receiving the vaccine. Please also thoroughly disinfect your farms to prevent the introduction of livestock infectious diseases. The county will do its utmost, mobilizing contract veterinarians and all available resources, to ensure the success of this vaccination campaign."
