According to Paju City on the 17th, the city is renovating buildings formerly used by the U.S. military on the 610,808㎡ (approximately 190,000 pyeong) site of the Camp Howze return area and is carrying out projects to build infrastructure such as parks. As part of this, the baseball stadium construction project was also promoted. The newly established baseball stadium involved a total project cost of 3 billion KRW, including 2.4 billion KRW in national funds, and has a total floor area of 10,000㎡, featuring one baseball field and auxiliary facilities.
At the opening ceremony held on the 15th, about 150 people including Kim Kyung-il, Mayor of Paju City, National Assembly member Park Jung, city council members, the Paju City Sports Council, heads of Jori-eup organizations, and residents attended. The event included a ceremonial first pitch, ribbon cutting, and viewing of a friendly match among clubs.
After the opening ceremony, two friendly games were held between the Paju Baseball Club teams White Horse and Windy, and the baseball teams of Geumneung Middle School and Yulgok Middle School, drawing positive responses.
Kim Kyung-il, Mayor of Paju City, said, “It is meaningful that a baseball stadium has opened on Camp Howze, a U.S. military return site opened after 72 years. With the construction of this baseball stadium, the sports base in Paju City will expand through friendly matches among baseball clubs and attracting training teams, and talented youth players such as those in youth baseball teams will have training spaces, which is expected to further develop baseball in Paju City.”
He added, “Paju City will continue to do its best to increase sports infrastructure, including promoting a dome stadium, and to provide a better sports environment.”
