A public opinion poll revealed that the theory of regime change is gaining momentum ahead of the impeachment trial of President Yoon Suk-yeol currently underway at the Constitutional Court. The Democratic Party of Korea was found to be leading the People Power Party in party support ratings beyond the margin of error.


According to a poll released on the 17th by Realmeter (commissioned by Energy Economy Newspaper, conducted from the 12th to the 14th nationwide among 1,510 people aged 18 and over, using 100% automated response via mobile phones, with a response rate of 7.2%, and a 95% confidence level with a ±2.5 percentage point margin of error), the preference for the next presidential administration showed that the opposition party’s regime change theory rose by 5.1 percentage points from the previous week to 55.5%. The ruling party’s regime continuation theory fell by 4.0 percentage points to 40.0%.

Realmeter explained, "The difference between the two opinions was 15.5 percentage points, with the regime change sentiment leading beyond the margin of error for three consecutive weeks."


By age group, regime change opinions were dominant among those in their 40s (regime continuation 29.2% vs. regime change 67.7%), 50s (32.2% vs. 65.7%), 20s (39.0% vs. 54.9%), and 30s (40.8% vs. 54.0%). Among those in their 60s, opinions were similar between regime continuation and regime change (50.2% vs. 46.5%), while those aged 70 and above favored regime continuation (51.0% vs. 40.9%).


In party support ratings, the People Power Party’s support rate dropped by 3.7 percentage points from the previous week to 39.0%. The Democratic Party of Korea’s support rate rose by 3.3 percentage points to 44.3%. The gap between the two parties widened to 5.3%, exceeding the margin of error within just one week.


Regarding suitability for the next presidential candidate, Lee Jae-myung, leader of the Democratic Party, recorded 46.9%. Kim Moon-soo, Minister of Employment and Labor, had 18.1%, Hong Joon-pyo, Mayor of Daegu, 6.5%, Han Dong-hoon, former leader of the People Power Party, 6.3%, Oh Se-hoon, Mayor of Seoul, 6.2%, Yoo Seung-min, former lawmaker, 2.4%, Lee Nak-yeon, former Prime Minister, 2.2%, Kim Dong-yeon, Governor of Gyeonggi Province, 1.2%, Kim Boo-kyum, former Prime Minister, 0.8%, and Kim Kyung-soo, former Governor of South Gyeongsang Province, 0.4%.
